Investigators meet in Terceira to debate projects in the areas of the Biotechnology and of the Biomedicine

The Regional Directorate for Science and Technology had promoted on last Thursday and Friday, in Angra do Heroísmo, the first Scientific Days of the Biotechnology and Biomedicine Institute.
The meeting, which takes place in Caracol Hotel, with the participation of several ten of investigators of the Regional Scientific and Technological System which activities are connected with the areas of the Biotechnology and of the Biomedicine, marks the beginning of the activities of the recently created Biotechnology and Biomedicine Institute of the Azores (IBBA).
Sponsored by the Government of the Azores, the IBBA is a partnership of investigation and development (I&D) that implicates as scientific partners the Specialized Service of Epidemiology and Molecular Biology of the Santo Espírito Hospital of Angra do Heroísmo, E.P.E., the Unity of Molecular Genetics and Pathology of the Divino Espírito Santo Hospital of Ponta Delgada, E.P.E., and the University of the Azores, represented by the Center of Biotechnology of the Azores, IMAR/DOP Center, Investigation and Natural Resources Center and Investigation and Agrarian Technologies Center.
During the meeting there will be presented more than sixty scientific works, oral and posters, in their majority by young investigators connected with the scientific unities that materialize the IBBA.
For João Luís Gaspar, regional director for Science and Technology, these scientific days constitute a “moment of extreme importance for the implementation of one of the most important and structuring projects” of the Government in the dominion of the scientific investigation.
“It is important to provide to the Azorean investigators a moment of discussion and debate on the works that are current, in order to guarantee synergies that should allow stimulating the human, technical and financial existent resources in the Region”, he underlined.
As he revealed in the presentation of the program of the meeting, one of the main subjects in analysis during the days will be that that regards the development of the future Technological Park of Terceira Island, to be built in the attached lands to the current buildings of the university pole of Terra-Chã.
Carlos Faro, scientific director of the Technological Park of Cantanhede “Biocant”, and Sandro Paim, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Angra do Heroísmo, will be the invited speakers to promote the discussion on this matter.
